TASK 8 - Drake - 'Headlines'

This is Drake's music video for a single off his album 'Take Care'. Even though headlines are never mentioned in the lyrics, the title suggests that Drake has realised his success and impact in the rap game, and he knows that his releases are big news, worthy of a headline.

This music video has endless amounts of editing techniques incorporated into it, as well as a number of different settings where Drake looks completely different in all locations, maybe suggesting that he has many different faces and can act differently in all types of areas and occasions. On one of the location settings, there is a billboard in the back with the artists album name plastered on it for everyone to see. This is an example of product placement as the artists album is being advertised through the artists music video; an example of synergy.

Most of the editing is in time with the clicks and beats of the actual song, which is a clever and creative aspect and looks professional and well done. There isn't even a second in the music video where there is not any form of editing technique, whether this being split screen, jumping, blurring or even just extremely fast straight cuts in the middle of takes to create a hash scene. The excessive amount of editing techniques could depict Drakes life as constantly busy and different every day, as he was an upcoming star at the release of this album, he is constantly in the middle of the screen and the editing is done around him, he is always the center of attention. The music video is anything but boring, and audiences are constantly grabbed until the very end.

Throughout the video, Drake is expressing his feelings through his hand gestures and facial expressions, he sings the track the entire way through, in every setting he's in. He is in every single shot, with a dozen examples of product placement entering his video, including the OVO bird, the album, and OVO being written on the wall in the back of one of the locations.
Drake is styled differently in every location, one he is dressed casual, one was smart as if he was going to a wedding, another was office wear and gym wear, and even sports wear. This could suggest again that Drake has many different sides to him that people are yet to explore. It wasn't only Drake featured in the music video, his 'crew' are situated around him in most of the locations. This in itself helps show that Drake fits into the hip/hop genre as typically these artists include their crew in their music videos.
This music video tends to focus on the editing techniques used rather than different shot types. Although saying this, there is still a number of different shot types throughout the video including mid shots, high angles, close ups and long shots to feature Drake in different angles and shot lengths.
