This video holds a number of editing techniques and creative aspects I would love to recreate and explore, so I have decided to analyse this video in order to gain further knowledge into the makings of music videos, on screen and behind.
This music video comes from the dance genre by artist Calvin Harris. The music video to this song includes famous model Gigi Hadid, giving audience appeal instantly.
The video follows a women making her way through a club, with edited footage of the women in a room looking distressed and even angry. Even the start of the music video suggests that the women is drugged as she is looking around as if shes lost and doesn't know anyone.
It is clear that throughout the entire video the main perfomer is unaware of the people around her, and appears to be in her own little world and trapped in her own head, this could perhaps even explain the shots where Gigi is on her own and messing with her hair and looking at her hands, trying to gain understanding of herself. She bumps into multiple people in the club, looking confused and unaware of where she is, and strips of her dress infront of people around a pool. On the boat it is clear she doesn't know anyone, and even quite possibly doesn't know how she got there. The people on the boat look at her in confusion, as edited images jump into the video to again show her in the room on her own with the fast paced editing and coloured lights. This happens continuously throughout the video as she continues through the club, boat, and jungle.
CAMERA -
The camera keeps to the usual mid shots and close ups throughout the video, it also adds in extreme long shots when you see Gigi on the boat, multiple low angle shots, and even a birds eye view shot. The camera circles Gigi and follows her throughout the video, specifically focusing on Gigi, and in turn the performers around her are irrelevant. The camera uses a lot of movement as well as still shots, keeping the video revealing more and keeping the audience entertained.
MISE EN SCENE -
The costumes in this music video do not follow a theme other than in the club everyone is dressed in youthful clothing that would be expected of in a club. Gigi is wearing a see through dress, this and the setting could suggest that this music is targetted at a younger audience.
There isn't many props to talk about in this music video, a yacht is used as part of the location, and at the start of the video before the music comes in Gigi is laying on a medical bed with a lot of metal equipment surrounding her, instantly gaining narrative enigma from the start. Other than that, there isn't many props to tell a story. The video is mainly following the performer on her way through the club, and focuses on the development of the perfomer after she exits the room she was seen in at the start.
EDITING -
The music video includes a number of interesting editing techniques, as well as quick editing for the entire video, a convention of music videos.
Throughout the video, there is multiple times where the take is slowed down for effect, as well as some scenes that are sped up too. This keeps the video creative and could also connote her feelings as she is clearly unaware of where she is and who she is, the speeding up of the frame could represent her high points and the slowed down frames representing the performer as low and unaware.
The scenes in which Gigi is sat in a room on her own, there is clever techniques used to portray her confusion and feelings. The lighting changes at a fast speed as the performer is seen holding and shaking her head, clearly confused and in a state. The colouring itself adds a different twist to the video and captivates the audience.
Another edit used is a technique called ghosting. This is where there is a slow motion frame with what looks like separated visuals are added just behind the time of the original take, making it look blurry, maybe portraying the performers feelings and state. This is an effect that I would love to recreate in my music video and I find that it captures the audience and keeps the video interesting with the use of different editing techniques.
Some frames are edited together with the help of the light acting as a straight cut transition into the next scene. This really keeps the video as one and is an interesting technique used instead of visible editing such as straight cutting.
SOUND -
The music fits with the visuals as when the hook of the song is in play, the visuals speed up and contain more shots than in the verses of the track. The setting and location is suitable for the song as this type of song is a dance song that would be found in clubs. The visuals are sped and slowed to suit the sound, and the video suits the track completely.
Lyrics wise, the video has no obvious relevence to the lyrics, and is just a fun video to accompany the hit song featuring the popular model that could be a role model for women and younger audiences, therefore gaining views and attracting audiences.
THEORISTS -
At the start of the video, Gigi looks straight into the camera just as the music makes a ghosted 'ahh' sound. This can be related to Andrew Goodwin's relationship between music and visuals. There is also constant close ups of the performer, which could be related to the idea that record labels will include many close ups to develop star iconography. Except the perfomer in this music video is not the artist of this song, therefore doesn't relate. BUT, this in itself could relate to Dyer's theory on that a star is simultaneously absent and present for the consumer, in this case, Calvin Harris is absent from the video yet present as the vast majority of people recognise his music type and that this song is produced and made by him.
