Dyer - Theorist

Dyer -

This theorist believes that the word 'star' refers to the set of meanings constructed around music performers. He says that to reach stardom, you have to obtain these things;

- Youthfulness
- Rebellion
- Sexual magnetism
- Anti authoritarian attitudes
- Originality
- Creativity
- Aggression
-Disregard to social values relating to drugs/sex and like behaviours
- Consumption of sex, drugs and material goods
- Success against the odds.

He claims the star is an image and not a real person constructed out of a range of materials, e.g. adverts, mags, posters, films, music videos.

This is based on two paradoxes;
1) Simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the audience
2) Simultaneously present and absent for the consumer.
